There was a show called Trackdown in the late '50s, a western starring Robert Culp (I swear, you wouldn't recognize him).
One of the episodes features a con man coming to town trying to sell the townfolk a wall to surround the city to save them from meteorites that are headed smack dab for the heart of their town. Everyone but Hoby (Culp's character) believes him and are ready to hand over all their money to the con man.
